Frewen College Celebrates Excellence at Prize Giving and Speech Day 2026

We were delighted to welcome families, governors, alumni, staff and friends of the school for our annual Prize Giving and Speech Day on Thursday 2nd July 2026, a cherished occasion that celebrates the achievements, growth and aspirations of our remarkable students.

Set against the backdrop of a beautiful summer's day, the school's grounds were bathed in sunshine as guests gathered from 10.30am for refreshments before the ceremony began. The warm weather and relaxed atmosphere provided the perfect setting for one of the most significant events in the Frewen College calendar, bringing together the entire school community to recognise academic success, personal development and outstanding contribution to school life.

The ceremony opened with reflections on another successful year at Frewen College, highlighting the determination, resilience and ambition demonstrated by students across all year groups. Prize Giving offers an opportunity not only to celebrate achievement but also to acknowledge the individual journeys that make every Frewen student unique.

This year's special guest speaker was Beatrice Montgomery-Christy, a former Frewen College pupil whose inspiring address resonated with students and parents alike. Reflecting on her experiences since leaving Frewen, Beatrice spoke passionately about embracing opportunities, overcoming challenges and pursuing ambitions with confidence and determination. Her personal story served as a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of a supportive educational environment and the importance of believing in one's potential. Since leaving school, Beatrice has developed a successfully freelance career, including working with organisations such as the BBC and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Guests also heard from members of the Frewen College leadership team. Mr Mark Loveday, Headmaster, reflected on another successful year for Frewen College, highlighting the remarkable progress made by students both academically and personally. He spoke about the importance of nurturing confidence, resilience and individuality. He also shared the College's commitment to providing an education that extends beyond the classroom, encouraging students to embrace new challenges, develop independence and discover their passions.

Mrs Hazel McCalvey, Deputy Head (Academic), celebrated the outstanding academic achievements of pupils throughout the year, recognising their hard work, intellectual curiosity and commitment to learning.

Mr Adam Terrell, Deputy Head (Pastoral), reflected on the many examples of kindness, resilience and positive character demonstrated by students, highlighting the importance of wellbeing and personal growth as key elements of a successful education.

Miss Hannah Lewis, Head of Boarding, shared the many successes of our boarding community, celebrating the friendships, independence and sense of belonging that are such an important part of the Frewen boarding experience.

The presentation of prizes was a proud moment for students and their families, and applause filled the room as pupils were celebrated for their achievements and dedication throughout the year.

Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed a delicious lunch on the Library Lawn, where families, staff and students were able to spend time together. A traditional Pimm's reception added to the celebratory atmosphere, creating a quintessentially English summer occasion and providing an opportunity for the wider school community to connect and reflect on the successes of the year.

Visitors also had the opportunity to view a student art exhibition, which showcased the creativity, talent and individuality of Frewen College pupils. Featuring a diverse range of artworks, the exhibition highlighted the strength of the school's creative arts programme and offered guests a fascinating insight into the imagination and artistic development of our students.

As the afternoon drew to a close, the sense of pride across the school was unmistakable. Prize Giving and Speech Day remains a wonderful opportunity to celebrate not only academic achievement, but also the confidence, character and life skills that enable Frewen students to thrive both within and beyond the classroom.

At Frewen College, we are committed to helping every young person to aspire, believe and achieve. This year's Prize Giving and Speech Day was a fitting celebration of that mission and of the exceptional young people who make our school such a special place.

We would like to thank all those who attended and contributed to making the day such a memorable success. We look forward to continuing to support our students as they embark on the next stage of their educational journey.
